Review: Anki & Spaced Repetition Systems (SRS)
Readers with good memories will recall that a few weeks ago I promised you all a review of Anki, a free flashcard application that uses “spaced repetition”. If you don’t remember, don’t worry; this post may be even more relevant for you!
Review: Lang-8 ... the site that makes language exchange work
Following the recent announcement by Japanese social-networking website Mixi that all content posted by their users will become their intellectual property at the end of March, analytical blog Japan Probe has recommended language exchange site Lang-8 as an alternative platform for students of Japanese!
Despite already having online language-study profiles in far too many different places, I took a look at Lang-8 and am impressed.
Fun with “Teach Yourself Korean”
When I discovered just how scarce Korean study materials were, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to give the “Teach Yourself” series another chance. After all, with a couple of years of successful course tuition under my belt and over six months of self-study in the bag, how difficult could it be? A few months back I was impressed to see a new range of “Teach Yourself” language courses in the bookshops authored by self-proclaimed multi-lingual expert Elisabeth Smith . They look great; concentrating on speaking and listening and emphasizing frequent practice (35-45 minutes daily), it seems as though Hodder and Stoughton might finally have acknowledged the value of what Dr Pimsleur came up with some years ago.
Unfortunately Ms Smith has yet to author a book on Korean, and there is no “Beginners Korean” to break you in gently.
A solution for Kanji
For some time I should have been learning Kanji. Despite having diligently purchased a set of Tuttle Kanji Cards, counted the first hundred out of the box and bound them (adoringly) in a bright red elastic band on my bedside table, knowledge of their contents has yet to miraculously transfer itself to my brain. I haven't touched them for weeks.
This is a bit of a shame, as I had developed my own method of using them and had hoped to be able to write about how successful it was here in the blog!
Fortunately I've been rescued by Declan Software, those same clever people who created the new "Word of the day" on iGoogle (mentioned here a week or so ago).
